Waste classification: EWC codes explained simply

Dott. Salvatore Novara2026-01-22Updated: 2026-08-017 min

Every waste must be classified with the correct EWC code (European Waste Catalogue). Classification determines how the waste is managed, the documentation required and the penalties if an error is made. Here is how it works and which mistakes to avoid.

What the EWC code is

The EWC code is made up of six digits and identifies the type of waste (for example 17 01 01 for concrete). The codes are grouped into chapters that indicate the sector of origin or the activity.

How waste is classified

Classification starts with identifying the waste and its origin, continues with assigning the code and is completed by checking the hazardous properties (HP).

  • Identifying the origin and the process that generates the waste
  • Assigning the correct EWC code
  • Checking the hazardous properties
  • Analyses and characterisation where necessary

Common mistakes

The most common mistakes are using generic codes without checking, failing to distinguish hazardous from non-hazardous waste and failing to carry out characterisation when required. An incorrect code can lead to waste being refused and to penalties.
