FIR: the waste identification consignment note

The information is general in nature and does not replace consultancy: obligations must always be verified against the specific situation and current regulations.

When is the FIR needed and how should it be completed correctly?

The FIR (waste identification consignment note) accompanies the transport of waste from the producer to the recipient. It must be completed with the details of the producer, the carrier and the recipient, the EWC codes, the quantities and the destination facility. The originals must be kept for the periods set by the legislation.

What the FIR is

The FIR is the document that accompanies every waste transport and guarantees its traceability. It consists of several sections: details of the producer, the carrier and the recipient, description of the waste and destination facility.

How it is completed

Every field must be completed carefully: the correct EWC code, the actual quantities, the companies' details and signatures. An error can make the document non-compliant and lead to penalties.

  • Complete details of the producer, carrier and recipient
  • EWC code and quantities consistent with the load
  • Signatures in the required fields
  • Retention of the originals

Common mistakes

The most common mistakes are incorrect EWC codes, unchecked quantities, missing signatures and failure to keep the originals. The recipient's failure to return the copy must also be managed.
