RENTRI: registration, obligations and deadlines

The information is general in nature and does not replace consultancy: obligations must always be verified against the specific situation and current regulations.

Who must register with RENTRI and what must they do?

The obligation to register with RENTRI depends on the type of party, the activity carried out and the characteristics of the waste handled. Original producers, carriers, dealers, brokers and facility operators are involved. Registration was rolled out in phases based on categories and size. The check must always be made on the actual situation of the business.

What RENTRI is

RENTRI (the National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability) is the digital system for waste traceability that progressively replaces paper registers and forms. Its rules are set out in Legislative Decree 152/2006, as amended by Ministerial Decree 59/2023.

Who must register

The obligation involves parties handling waste: original producers, carriers, dealers, brokers, consortia and facility operators. Registration took place in different phases over time.

  • Original producers of hazardous and non-hazardous special waste (depending on size thresholds)
  • Carriers and brokers
  • Dealers and facility operators
  • Parties already required to keep loading and unloading registers

Who is excluded

Some categories may be excluded or subject to simplified obligations, for example producers of municipal waste or non-hazardous producers below certain thresholds. The check must be made case by case.

What the obligations are

The main obligations concern registration with the system, entering the data and keeping documentation in digital format, including the new register and transfer note templates.

Common mistakes and penalties

The most common mistakes are failing to register, failing to update data and using non-compliant forms. Breaches of traceability obligations can lead to administrative penalties.

Frequently asked questions

Registration was staggered in phases based on the categories and size of the parties involved. Your position needs to be checked: you may fall into a phase that is already closed or into an obligation still to be fulfilled.
