RENTRI: who must register and what the deadlines are
Registration with RENTRI concerns those who produce, transport, trade, broker or manage waste. The obligation was introduced in phases, according to the category and the size of the operator. The check must always be made against the actual situation of your business.
What RENTRI is and why it matters
RENTRI (the National Electronic Register for Waste Traceability) is the digital system that makes the path of waste traceable from the producer to the final destination. Its rules are set out in Legislative Decree 152/2006, as amended by Ministerial Decree 59/2023.
The system progressively replaces paper registers and consignment notes, with digital templates and procedures.
Who is required to register
The obligation involves the parties that manage waste, in particular:
- Original producers of hazardous special waste and, depending on size thresholds, of non-hazardous waste
- Waste carriers
- Waste dealers and brokers
- Consortia and operators of recovery and disposal facilities
- Parties already required to keep loading and unloading registers
Who is excluded
Some categories may be excluded or subject to simplified obligations, for example small producers of non-hazardous waste below certain thresholds. The check must be made on the actual situation of your business.
The phases of registration
Registration with RENTRI took place in phases over time, according to the categories of operators and the size of the businesses. Businesses that registered within the prescribed deadlines have continued to comply; those that have not yet done so must check their position in order to avoid penalties.
Consequences of failing to register
Failing to register or breaching traceability obligations can lead to administrative penalties. It is better to check your position in good time, with the support of a consultant.
